Of course you can debate whether or not any psychic isn't really a scam artist, as nobody has ever proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that people really do have psychic ability. However, assuming that there are true psychics in the world, then how do you tell the real ones from the ones who are just out to take your money?

In all honesty, it isn't easy to tell when you are being scammed as most of the scammers are very well trained in the area of the occult that they specialize in.

In other words, they know just enough to sound convincing and legitimate. This makes it all the harder to pick out the cheats. There are, however, some things to look out for.

One thing is the price you are charged for the service and whether or not the psychic tries to get you to have future readings and how hard they may push for this. A legit psychic, depending on how well known they are, will probably do a reading for somewhere between $15 and $100 for a half hour reading. Most really legitimate ones are at the lower end of the price range. They try to give you a lot of value for your money and this is commendable. However, there are those who charge as much as $300 to $1000 for that same half hour reading. At the end they say that there is still more that they need to tell you but they don't have the time in one reading. They then suggest that you make another appointment. For the most part, these psychics are the scam artists and need to be avoided at all costs. Before you agree to a reading ask what it will cost. This will give you a pretty good idea if it's legit or not.

Another form of a psychic scam, and this is really subtle, is to advertise to people who have been the victim of a psychic scam. They put in the ad that if you have been the victim of a psychic scam that you should come to see them and they will work with you for as long as it takes to get your self confidence back. This is known as psychic dependency and is just the worst kind of psychic scam as it prays on the insecurities of the poor people who have already been scammed. Any time you see an ad like this, more likely than not, it has been posted by someone running a scam.

Then we have the phone scams. These are where you call up a 900 number to get some kind of reading by some well known psychic. In truth, on the other end is just a person who has been set up with a phone by the phone company. The scammer's job is to keep the unsuspecting victim on the phone for as long as possible as they are being billed by the minute and the charges are astronomical. Most of these scammers are just very good actors and incredibly skilled at keeping people intrigued.

Of course there are other scams that we'll cover in future articles. These are the ones to be most on the lookout for. By knowing what to look for you can avoid being a victim of a psychic scam.

Some Thoughts about Telemarketing "Psychic Readers"

I want to address readers who work for what is termed “Psychic Networks”. Newspapers, magazines and the Internet are the usual means of advertisement for telemarketing firms that offer readings of various types. Some are “sponsored” by the rich and famous, who receive royalties for lending their images or “testimonials” to the advertising campaign.

There are a few facts about telemarketing “psychic readers” that you should know.

1. Many of the most popular and most advertised “psychic readers” networks are owned and operated by attorneys and professional marketing consultants. The basis for their business is about advertising, marketing and potential lawsuits. The clients who call their many different psychic networks are only a source of money for them. More deeper than that, they are the ones who orchestrate the type of reading you will receive when you consult one of their “psychics” when you are heartbroken, confused or down on your luck.

2. The tag line, “for entertainment purposes only” is a method of defense in the event that a client challenges them with a lawsuit about the advice they received from the company’s employees.

3. The “psychics readers” that you contact from these companies work in call centers or from their home after your call has been re-routed to their personal phone line. These employees are given a chance to do a “sample” reading for the employer, who is listening to their ability to use language flush with explanations to entice the caller to stay on the line a long time and to lose track of minutes used. Many times, the “psychic” will give confusing information on the “reading”, which prompts the caller to ask many questions for clarity and uses up minutes. Remember, the caller is billed from the moment the call is first answered, despite some callers being put “on hold” while the caller is “being connected”. All the while, soothing music and a caring female voice is telling the caller that “your reading will be honest and truthful by our professional readers”

4. Most telephone "psychic readers” are paid between $10.00 and $15.00 an hour and only when they are doing readings on the telephone. While the “psychic” is waiting on a call, they are not being paid. Remember, the caller is paying $1.99 to $3.99 a minute for their reading. Spend 30 minutes on the telephone and you may be paying $59.00 to $120.00 for that time spent with that reader. Who is getting paid? The networks, of course.

I am giving you some idea about how these companies work and to see what is the real motive for advertising psychic services. The bottom line is that these companies are out to make money so if you are fortunate to get a good reader on the phone, your reading is geared to extract the most money out of your wallet that they possibly can.

In closing, please consider staying away from telemarketing “psychic” companies unless you have a direct referral from a satisfied client who gave you a specific reader to consider for your reading. Otherwise, you a calling a stranger who is primed to take your money and may not have any experience at all.

1. Your psychic is listed with problems with the Better Business Bureau

If the psychic or psychic company you are interested in using has a "D" rating or worse with the Better Business Bureau, watch out! That psychic or psychic company just might be a fake.

To be clear, there are literally thousands upon thousands of psychics and psychic companies in the world, and the Better Business Bureau only lists a handful of those companies. Just because your psychic is not listed with the Better Business Bureau does not necessarily mean your psychic is a potential fake.

Also, the Better Business Bureau does not determine whether a psychic is real or not. The Better Business Bureau only provides information about what other customers report about the service, or customer service, they received from the company.

However, if your psychic IS listed with a "D" rating or worse with the Better Business Bureau then proceed with caution! Your psychic just might be a fake.

2. Your psychic wants extra money to clear a curse on you

A very common trick of fake psychics is to tell you sometime during your reading that the reason for your (or your family's) misfortune is because you have a curse (or negative spiritual energy or other such terms) on you, and that it will take money in the form of more readings, or expensive candles, crystals or other items to remove the curse.

However, it's far more likely that the only real curse on you is the curse of having found your way into the clutches of a fake psychic. Believing that this curse on you is real is probably the closest thing to a curse you'll actually ever have.

Most of us have misfortune in our lives not because of curses but because of events or conditions that often are not in our control. If you find that your psychic tells you about curses that are placed on you are the root cause of you problems, and that they can fix your curse by you providing them with more money, watch out! Your psychic just might be a fake.

3. Your psychic guarantees you results

Your mother was right, there are no guarantees in life. Guess what? There are no guarantees with psychics and their results either. If a psychic is offering you a guarantee that they will make something happen for you, like making someone fall in love with you, or making your life better by removing a curse from you (see item #2 above) or guaranteeing that you'll be getting whatever it is you want, be careful.

Mediums and psychics don't actually make anything happen at all. In fact, they simply "read" the psychic energy that is present around us, or is present from the spirits of those who have passed on, and communicate their interpretation of that energy back to you. If your psychic is making guarantees to you about making something happen for you then it might be a good idea for you to carefully reconsider using that psychic. Your psychic just might be a fake.

4. Your psychic asks for your Social Security number or other sensitive financial information

No no no! For all of you in the United States: Do NOT reveal your Social Security information to anyone that does not need it for a very important reason. The Government may require that you enter your social security number for getting a passport. Your bank or mortgage company may require your social security number for setting up a loan or other account, but your psychic should NEVER need your social security number, period.

If your psychic asks you for your social security number out of the blue then stop dealing with that psychic immediately. Your psychic just might be (more than likely is) a fake.

5. Your psychic continually changes their phone number and other contact information

Psychics in good standing with the public do everything they can to ensure the public can find them. After all, it's good for their business if they can establish many different ways for people to contact them when looking for their services. Staying in one place and using one phone number for a long time is a benefit.

If your psychic is constantly changing phone numbers, or business locations, or both, then be cautious. People who don't want to be found usually end up changing their locations and other contact information rather often. If they don't want to be found that means someone, or some organization, may be looking for them.

To be fair, everyone moves in their lifetime, but if your psychic is constantly moving or changing phone numbers then be sure to ask more questions before trusting them. Your psychic just might be a fake.

6. You have a bad feeling about the psychic

Therefore, if after searching around your neighborhood for a reliable psychic only to fail - and if you are uncomfortable with an online reading, your next search should be for a psychic reading by telephone.

Okay - but is this even possible you are asking, right?

Well, first you need to understand how a reading can be done without being in the presence of the psychic. Psychics use intuition which is not bound by time or space. Some services even have the psychic call you back. When you call the number your information is taken by an operator who then forwards those details and the kind of reading you are looking for to a psychic. If a psychic who does the precise reading you are searching for is not available at that time - the operator will give you an approximate time they will be free and when to expect their call. This is a great way of promoting a legit psychic reading by phone - because you are not on hold at any point and are getting the quality of service at the price given to you in advance.

If you choose to continue past the given amount of time (some calls have a limit of 20/30 minutes for a certain price), you should be told when that time is up and that to continue you will be charged "such a price". This gives you the control on whether you want to continue the reading and pay more. At this point you should know whether you are comfortable with the psychic - are they giving you correct information - are they doing so with care and respect? Are YOU Psychic? Check This To See

How do you know if you're psychic? Most people are, to some degree, even if they don't refer to themselves that way. Most people have some sense of what's coming, even if they don't quite trust it. In fact, one of the main reasons people call me is to validate impressions that they have themselves, and I'm happy to do that. So over the years, I've talked with too many other psychics (though they may not think of themselves that way) to count. And we all have a few major issues:

First, we're all incredibly impatient! We expect what we "see" (or "hear" or "feel" or "know" or dream, henceforth all referred to as "see") to happen immediately. I mean, if we "see" it as true, then why isn't it here now? As I remind people constantly, in physical reality, things take time. Yes, in the spiritual world, things happen as fast as we can see or imagine them, but in the physical world, actual people and things have to be in actual places for an event to happen, and it takes time to move those to the appropriate positions. And most of us are bad at knowing how long it will take for the reality we "see" to show up.

I suspect that most of us have particular time signatures for certain types of events, though those signatures can change over time (I know mine have gotten faster). What is a time signature? It's the length of time between when I choose to create something, and "see" it, and when it actually happens. I have two types of signatures. My time signature for things seems to be a few days. That is, when I choose for a thing to show up, such as a toy basket or a beach chair, they tend to be in my path within a few days - I don't go looking for them, they just show up. But bigger items, like my husband or a meditation group, tend to take longer - 9 months, in fact.

Second, we're all very attached to what we "see", so that if we don't "see" something, or get it wrong, we then invalidate everything else we've ever "seen". That's just not so! No psychic is right 100% of the time. A good one is right 80-85% of the time. So why invalidate what is right because not all of it is? And I have definitely seen some psychics go into identity crises because they've been wrong. No one expects a stock picker to be right 100% of the time, and in a way, they're in the same business. Why should you expect more of yourself?

Third, we assume that everyone else is like us. Now to some extent, everyone is psychic. I really do believe that we're all born with an innate connection to all that is, and so we can access this information. But if you tend to see where things are going, and/or how other people feel or will act, you tend to assume you're normal (what is 'normal', anyway?) and that everyone else does this, too. They don't. At least, not to the degree that you do. And so we tend to be impatient with others for not seeing what we see.

A Psychic Forcefield - Does it Really Exist?

Much of the lore surrounding psychic phenomena can get quite far fetched if you are reading the wrong things and looking in questionable places for answers. Let's take a look at the notion of a psychic force field, and see whether it has any basis in fact, or whether it exists strictly in the shallow waters of popular fiction.

Much of the early lab work done on psychics, back in the 1950's and 1960's dealt with the idea of a psychic being able to generate a "ring" of energy around themselves, purely through the power of their mental focus of conviction. The Soviet Union, both before and even during the cold war, was studying the possibility that a group of psychics might be able to construct a field of protection so wide and dense, that it would have military grade purposes!

Now - for those who believe in both science, and psychic phenomena, I've got both good, and bad news..:-) The Good news is, any objective evaluation of the tests done on psychic phenomena in a laboratory setting on a large scale basis have shown an incredible body of evidence to support that we do ABSOLUTELY posses amazing, life changing psychic skills as a human race. From remote viewing experiments done by the C.I.A, to the random number generator tests done at Princeton University, to the incredible body of work produced by the Rhine Institute and far, far beyond - there is a wealth of facts that support the notion that human beings have incredible, untapped psychic skills that can be DEVELOPED and practiced much like playing the piano, or a good jump shot on the basketball court can.

There is not, however, any evidence that we are able to generate a force field of psychic protection around us either as individuals or sovereign countries! It might be nice if there was, though, right? So the next time someone tells you they can create a star trek like shield around themselves using nothing but psychic energy, you may want to walk in the other direction!

Now - the one thing caveat I will make to the above is this: Most scientists and parapsychologists who study PSI ( the scientific name for the study of psychic phenomena) will tell you it APPEARS to be an evolving skill. This means that it can be improved upon, maybe both as individuals, as well as a species. Lots of good theories abound that the next great evolution in human beings might be in these very realms.

So, who knows - maybe 50, 100, 200 years from now we will all have the ability to generate a psychic force field around us when we are having a bad day, in a rotten mood, or just feel like being left alone..:-) Until then though, for now, it's as much science fiction as Mr. Spock and the rest of the crew!

Deja Vu - A Dot Com Era Business Emerges Again

If you don't recall a service called Keen allow me to refresh you memories. Keen was originally launched in 1999 as a sort of online 1-900 number. The basic idea being that you pay to call an expert. Since anyone could set themselves up as an expert with no real credentials of any kind the site eventually devolved into an online way to reach psychics, and well lonely ladies looking for someone to chat to. So what's the difference between Keen and a new service called Ether?

Nothing. That's right both Keen and Ether are owned by the same company Ingenio. So will the service have any better luck the second time around?

There is actually one difference between Ether and it's predecessor Keen. Keen has an E-bay like directory set up so you can browse through the services whereas Ether has no way of searching its listings at all. One member has started a directory through the forums and from what I can tell there are already a few psychics on board as well as several "experts" who are charging $25/hr or less which is fairly cheap for expert advice. Your average psychiatrist, or lawyer can charge upwards of $100/hr for their services.

The truth is when most people want expert advice they don't want an anonymous Internet expert. The want someone they've heard of, who friends have recommended, and who perhaps they can consult with in person if need be.

The other problem is that since E-bay has bought Skype you could essentially arrange the same thing through E-bay which allows you to use PayPal unlike Ether. While E-bay has more of a low end feel (it's basically an online flea market)they could create a spin-off site should there be a demand for this sort of thing.

Four months ago I signed up for Ether just to give a shot and see if it was worthwhile. I started my advice rate at $100/hr, but having received no calls lowered it to $75/hr last month. It doesn't cost anything to sign up, and in fact you only pay %15 commission on your calls. So Ether doesn't make money unless you do.

The only way to make money on Ether currently is to bring your own customer base, because there's no way to search the site for listings. The problem is that the same old idea has been relaunched without addressing the real issue. Are people willing to pay for advice online, and if so how much? Besides there is still the problem that the experts are still essentially self-proclaimed, and there's no way to search the listings and it doesn't take a psychic to tell you that this doesn't bode well.

Haunted Houses, Dead Tenants and a Big Tummy Ache

Is Psychic Ability Real?

Psychic energy, or “psi” is the transfer of information or energy that cannot be explained by a physical process. People who can do this consciously are called psychics. But does it really exist? Many don’t think so - either because they’ve never experienced it themselves, or because they’ve heard about or had personal experience with one of the great number of fake psychics making money off believers.

In the 1930s a set of psi testing methods were developed at Duke University. These consisted of a repetitive procedure in which the subject attempted to determine a target symbol from a set of alternatives. The percentage of time the subject was correct determined the amount of psychic ability he or she had. However, these types of tests failed to capture the types of psi that have been reported in everyday life.

For example, psychic energy has often been linked to meditation, hypnosis, drug use and especially dreaming. These altered states of consciousness, whether self-induced or naturally-occurring, have been the conduit for psychic experiences by individuals who did not consider themselves psychics - or think they had any such ability.

Researchers in the last 40 years or so have attempted to verify these anecdotal observations. Several tests on meditation indicate that it does, indeed, facilitate psi. Hypnosis, which is almost identical to meditation in effect but just uses a facilitator to achieve the trance state, has also proven to enhance one’s psychic ability.

To study how psychic energy reveals itself in dreams, the Maimonides experiments chose a subject to sleep in a dream laboratory. When the experimenter determined the subject had entered REM sleep, he’d signal another participant, the “sender”, to begin. This “sender” would concentrate on a randomly selected picture, trying to “send” this image to the sleeping subject. When the subject was nearing the end of REM sleep, he was awakened and asked to tell everything he remembered about his dreams. This was repeated several times during the night.

Independent judges were asked to judge the similarity of the dreams as described and the pictures the sender had been looking at. They also judged the similarity of the dreams to a different, randomly selected picture. The judges didn’t know which picture was which. The similarity rating was closer with the real pictures than the control pictures.

These newer tests led the experimenters to think that psi is a weak signal that can be easily clouded by other information coming in through the normal five senses.

Further studies were designed in which the subjects’ five senses were blocked and the subject was relaxed using traditional techniques. The sender was separated and acoustically isolated as he attempted to send visual data, again chosen at random, to the subject. At the same time, the subject gave a constant verbal description of the thoughts going through is mind. This went on for approximately 30 minutes per session. The subject was then given four visual cues, one of which the sender had been trying to communicate and asked which of them was most like the imagery he had experienced. Again, this test indicated the presence of psi with statistically significant results.

One must take these tests with a grain of salt because of what is known as “selective reporting”. Failed experiments are reported far less than successful ones. So whether or not psychic energy really exists is still hotly debated.
